Electric car couple bolt through Kamloops en route across Canada

KAMLOOPS — For some Canadians, the idea of an electric car gives them range anxiety. It’s a fear they’ll run out of juice before they reach their destination; but for a couple from the Sunshine Coast, they’re driving their new electric car clear across Canada, demonstrating  how reliable the technology has become

Buddy Boyd and Barb Heatherington dipped the wheels of their brand new Chevy Bolt electric car into the Pacific Ocean Saturday morning and drove all the way to Kamloops on the first day of their cross-Canada adventure.

“We thought since we have this car, and we haven’t been on vacation in 15 years; we’d see if we could drive from Victoria, BC to Quidi Vidi, NL and back,” Boyd explained.

The pair runs the Gibsons Recycling Depot, and are also part of the Zero Waste Canada team. They decided to make the journey partly as a vacation, and partly to raise awareness for the Zero Waste cause.

“We have to look in the mirror and say ‘How can we modify and adjust our lifestyles in a reasonable way?’” Boyd asked.

“Start with the coffee mug, or saying no straws, but then do something else. Keep upping your game,” Heatherington says.

Buddy and Barb are hoping this journey demonstrates to others that there’s no reason to shy away from electric vehicles and the need to charge them. In fact, they believe it’s quite the opposite.

“we have to stop and charge, we have to stop and breathe,” Boyd says. “Well, let’s go see what’s in Kamloops, let’s go see the museums. We’re taking a negative and turning into a positive.”
