Wet spring gives way to late allergy season in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Allergies are an annual annoyance for many Kamloops residents.

Some allergy sufferers claim their symptoms have been worse this year than ever before.

Missagh Manshadi, owner of Manshadi Pharmacy, says he doesn’t think this year’s allergy season has been worse, but it has been different.

“Allergy season was late,” Manshadi said, “and it’s just started so we see a lot of people coming in. I don’t know if it’s because of the flooding, there was more water, and maybe more mould happening around us.”

At the same time the water is receding, plants are beginning to bloom and produce pollen, one of several irritants causing problems for many in the city. 

“Itchy eyes, itchy nose, sneezing, watery eyes are some of the most common symptoms that we see for allergies,” Manshadi said. 

How are your allergies this season?

There are, however, ways to avoid those annoying allergy symptoms. 

“Google ‘pollen counts’. It will tell you if it’s low, moderate, high, or extreme. If it’s high, if you don’t have to go outside stay inside,” Manshadi said. “Close doors and windows, use air conditioning. If you have to do things outside maybe you can delegate to someone else.” 

If staying indoors isn’t an option, there are many over-the-counter medications that provide temporary relief. 

Manshadi says generic brands are just as useful, and less expensive than brand-name drugs.

He adds the best way to find the right treatment for specific symptoms is to simply talk to a pharmacist.
