Thompson River level begins to recede in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — A flood watch remains in effect for the North and South Thompson Rivers. However, water levels have dropped since the weekend.

Tammy Robertson, Information Officer with the city’s Emergency Operations Centre, says while the South Thompson River won’t peak for another week or two, the North Thompson River is now beginning to go down.

“As was predicted, the North Thompson did peak over the weekend. In fact, we have started to see water levels start to go down already. As of this morning we had seen a 9 cm drop at the Overlanders Bridge from Sunday,” said Robertson.

No new flooding measures have been taken, and Robertson expects water to begin receding from Riverside Park.

“The South Thompson will continue to rise over the next week or two until it reaches its peak, then it will start to go down. However, for the city at this time our concern was at the confluence of both rivers, and we are seeing those water levels go down. We should start to see water coming down, out of the park as well.”

Meantime, the park’s pier, Rivers trail, and boat launches remain closed.

Debris has also been piling beneath the CN bridge north of the Halston Bridge.

City officials have been in contact with CN, and the rail company is expected to begin removing the debris sometime this week.
