Kamloops Councillor Marg Spina to resign, triggering by-election

KAMLOOPS — Voters will head to a by-election later this year, but the number of spaces to be filled on Kamloops council is yet to be determined.

Councillor Marg Spina has officially tendered her resignation from council, effective June 30.

Spina has been battling breast cancer, and at a meeting earlier this month, said her illness is ‘not curable.’

According to Deputy Mayor Arjun Singh, staff will now work on preparing for a by-election, which is likely to take place around the end of September.

But Spina’s empty spot on council won’t be the only one to fill.

Mayor Peter Milobar was elected the MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson on May 9, and has taken an unpaid leave of absence from council.

Milobar has said he preferred to avoid a by-election, but would resign if a by-election was needed for another reason.

Milobar could not be reached for comment this afternoon.

Councillor Ken Christian has previously spoken about his intention to seek the mayor’s chair after Milobar’s departure, meaning he could resign his council seat to run for the top job.
