KAMLOOPS — This year’s crop of Thompson Rivers University honorary degree recipients includes an iconic Canadian advocate for First Nations people, and a local firefighter who has worked tirelessly to help those in need around the world.

Four men will receive honorary degrees at ceremonies next month.

The most well-known nationally is Senator Murray Sinclair, who led Truth and Reconciliation Commission into Canada’s Indian Residential Schools.

Dr. Roger Strasser will receive a Doctor of Laws.

Strasser is considered one of the world’s foremost authorities on rural medical education.

Documentary filmmaker Rudy Buttignol will be recognized for his arts advocacy as president and CEO of BC’s public broadcasting Knowledge Network.

And David Sakaki of Kamloops Fire Rescue will be bestowed with a Doctor of Letters.

Sakaki has traveled far and wide with the aid organization Global Medic, and can often be found organizing relief efforts after natural disasters hit areas of poverty around the world.
