Kamloops provincial election turnout especially disappointing for political expert

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — It’s the pressing question of any election.

How do you get more people to vote?

While advanced voter turnout for the provincial election was up 70% in Kamloops, total turnout numbers weren’t as impressive.

According to Elections BC, voter turnout for Kamloops-North Thompson was 56% while voter turnout in Kamloops-South Thompson was 61%.

Even though voting numbers have been an issue for quite some time, retired Political Studies Instructor Ray Pillar says this year’s results were especially disappointing.

“I thought with the effort and money that went into promoting people to get out and vote it would’ve improved it, especially among the younger demographic,” said Pillar. “What can I say, it’s pathetic.”

Elections BC produced a number of TV commercials advocating for B.C residents to get out and vote in the 2017 provincial election, with Retired Canuck Trevor Linden making a brief cameo in one of them.
