Washout cuts off access to 300 Shuswap properties

SALMON ARM, B.C. — More than 300 homes in the Shuswap have been cut off after a fast-flowing creek washed out a section of Eagle Bay Road yesterday.

The washout happened yesterday afternoon when Deroy Creek spilled over a culvert.

Shuswap Emergency Program Emergency Officer Ryan Nitchie says most of the properties cut off by the washout are seasonal.

“On the easterly side there are approximately 318 properties, however the majority of those are seasonal properties. We do have some permanent residents that are on the other side of the washout,” said Nitchie.

Nitchie says provincial officials are working on the channel and roadway in an effort to restore single-lane, alternating traffic.

He notes some residents have been accessing their properties by boat.
