KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Library is hoping to bring in a younger crowd during “Geek Week.”
The target crowd is 18-30 year-olds. The TNRD Library System’s head of adult services Catherine Schmidt says the goal is to show young people that the library is not just a place for studying in silence.
“The library is a fun place to be, not just for learning and studying, which they may be used to from their days in university,” Schmidt said, “but it’s now a fun place where they can get their DVDs, they can get their video games, and they can do programs like our scavenger hunts, and our craft programs and things like that.”
Escape rooms will be set up at the North Kamloops library throughout the week, and a ‘geeky’ craft night will be held at the downtown location on Thursday night.
Those events are just about full, but there is plenty of space at a pop culture trivia night at Frick and Frack on Friday and a downtown Kamloops scavenger hunt on Saturday.
A cosplay contest is also running all week long.
“It’s an attempt for people to show off their costumes and outfits that they’ve made in anime conventions, Comic Con, things like that,” Schmidt said. “We’re trying to get people to dress up as their favourite comic book or literary character, and then take a picture of themselves with their character’s favourite book and post it to our Facebook page.”
