Pinaus Lake Resort evacuated by threat of land slides

FALKLAND, B.C. — The threat of land slide activity has caused the Provincial Government to order the evacuation of the Pinaus Lake Resort near Falkland.

Slide activity has been noted in the area and ongoing testing shows the area isn’t stable.

Arvid and Audrey Hoglund have operated the resort with 13 cabins and some 20 RV’s for 30 years and they have been thrown out of business and closed down indefinitely.

Area ‘D’ Director Rene Talbot of the Columbia-Shuswap Regional District says outside influences could be partly to blame.

“Logging would probably have an impact because there’s been a fair amount of logging up there over the last 25-30 years.”

Talbot says this sudden evacuation is a shock to everyone.

“It’s a safety thing for them, but on the other hand they’ve been there, well I’ve been here 40 years, and they’ve been there longer than that, and all of a sudden they have nothing.”

“There’s a gate there and the Province has put up signs saying ‘no trespassing’ so I guess it is closed indefinitely, but there are a number of cabins also on that side of the lake so I imagine those people would be impacted too.”

Talbot has not heard if the Province will attempt to stabilize the mountain so the resort could re-open in future.
