Newly-opened Comfort Inn helps Merritt residents in need after fire

MERRITT, B.C. — The newly-opened Comfort Inn in Merritt stepped up on Thursday night to help residents displaced by an apartment fire on Merritt avenue, opening its arms to all of the residents living at Kengard Manor.

The hotel, which has only been open since Monday, welcomed 46 guests to stay overnight. The Comfort Inn reached out to the City of Merritt in the aftermath of the fire and said it had free rooms.

“We let City Hall give out 30 reservations to the hotel, and we invited them with open arms, and we’re happy to have them, happy to help out,” said Assistant Manager Karun Randhawa. “We’re locals from Merritt as well, so when anyone in Merritt needs help, we reach out to them.”

With other guests booked in Friday night, some displaced residents have had to find different accomodations. But the hotel says any extra rooms that are available can be used for victims of the fire. On Friday night, staff received a nice thank you note from one of the residents at the front desk.

“Yeah the note was great,” said Randhawa. “Definitely warms the heart, so that’s why we do it, right, for notes like that.”
