Kamloops makes a big splash on the big screen

KAMLOOPS — This is an exciting time for the local film industry, as recent large scale productions that have shot in the Kamloops area are being released.

The family film Monster Trucks, which shot all around Kamloops, opened in theatres last weekend.

“Monster Trucks, you clearly see Kamloops in the background, you see them driving all around. The opening shot is in Ashcroft, and you really recognize our terrain, which is a lot of fun,” said Thompson-Nicola Film Commissioner Vicci Weller.

And a new trailer for Power Rangers has been released online, showcasing several of the Kamloops-area locations where it filmed last year.

Power Rangers opens in theatres March 24.

Weller says Kamloops is becoming well-known in Hollywood and the larger film industry.

“All the major studios have filmed here, and top executives have visited here. We are becoming this jewel in the crown of British Columbia. On top of that B.C. is now almost the number one spot to make films in the world.”

Weller says there is nothing large scale going on in Kamloops right now, but several television and film productions are scoping the area out.

“We look like we have some productions looking our way. Some TV maybe looking in the Clearwater area. We are getting [questions] about that from another country. There might be something coming near Kamloops hopefully in the Spring, nothing solidified yet, but there are people looking around.”
