Is it a coincidence, Mr. Trump, that it’s raining today

KAMLOOPS — Was it any coincidence that it started raining as Donald Trump was sworn into office as the 45th president of the United States today?

The rain beaded on the shoulders of his trademark overcoat as he took the oath and gave a trademark speech — “We will make America great again.”

It was very probably one of the most ingracious, self-centered inauguration speeches in the history of that great country. One would have thought he was on the campaign trail.

How we longed to hear “the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself” (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) or “ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” (John F. Kennedy).

Instead, we got “We will get the job done.”

Trump paid lip service to the future, but only in the context of his own ego. And as he looked back, it was all doom and gloom and corruption and greed — things he will surely correct.

Trust me. “That all changes right here, right now, because this moment belongs to you.”

If only it were so. It was about the moment belonging to Trump. It’s all “part of a historic movement the likes of which the world has never seen before.” The Donald Trump movement, that is.

No more making other countries rich. It will now be America First. Terrorism will be vanquished. Factories will re-open. Jobs for all. No more “American carnage.” And, of course, “We’ll be protected by God.”

One thing that can be said for the speech — it was all Trump. Some lucky speech writer got to throw in a line about windswept plains but other than that, this was Trump speaking.

There were even the sniffs that we’ve come to expect when he’s at the microphone.

Yep, everything changes right here, right now. We believe you, Donald.

We believe the rain was no coincidence.
