Snowmobilers warned to follow the rules

SUN PEAKS, B.C. — RCMP say the roads aren’t for snowmobiles – even roads in Sun Peaks.

Corporal Jodi Shelkie says officers have noted several recent instances of snowmobiles ending up where they shouldn’t be, and she says it’s illegal, destructive and dangerous.

“Somebody who may be hiking, or skiing. People who are just in the neighbourhood walking down the sidewalks, even then people who are snowmobiling often come out very quickly off of the trails and don’t often see pedestrians,” said Shelkie.

Shelkie notes if caught, a snowmobiler can be subject to steep fines.

Those include a $598 touch for driving with no insurance.

Shelkie adds it’s always best that snowmobile operators keep their machines on their trailers until they reach the proper terrain.

“Not only is it dangerous for the people who are riding the snow machines, but it causes considerable damage to places like the golf course, and to trails that were never meant for snow machines.”
