Snowfall leads to temporary Coquihalla closure

UPDATE:

The Ministry of Transportation is reporting the southbound lanes of the Coquihalla are now fully open to traffic.

The northbound lanes are expected to open at about 5:00 p.m.

EARLIER:

KAMLOOPS — Extreme winter weather caused the closure of a pair of Southern Interior highways Thursday afternoon.

The Coquihalla Highway was closed in both directions between Merritt and Hope during the 3:00 hour.

And the eastbound Trans Canada Highway was shut down from Boston Bar to Yale, also due to extreme snowfall.

Drive BC webcams show traffic backed up and not moving around the Zopkios brake check.

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for high mountain passes earlier in the day.
