Boxing Day shoppers taking their time

KAMLOOPS — Boxing Day has traditionally been a big day for Canadian retailers, who used the day after Christmas holiday to liquidate extra stock. With Black Friday sales having now come north, and sales stretching out for a whole week. We went out shopping today, to see if the Boxing Day shopping frenzy was still in effect.

If you’re in the market for a big ticket item, Lance Yamada at Andre’s Electronics Experts is the guy to speak with. According to Yamada, Boxing Week sales are the best time of the year to buy those big items for your home, like electronics, or appliances.

“They’re either looking for the big TV… the other thing that’s always good on Boxing Day is home audio receivers,” Yamada told CFJC Today.

That month between Black Friday and Boxing Day can account for a significant portion of the profit a retailer like Andre’s records in an entire year.

“It’s probably a third of the whole entire year,” Yamada explained, adding “The whole event of Boxing Day has totally changed…[shoppers] buy very little, [just] stocking stuffers prior to Boxing Day, because they’re going to wait for the big items.”

With sales now stretching out for the entire week following Christmas, bargain hunters can take their time shopping instead of heading out early on Boxing Day to find the best deals.

“We were a little bit slow in the beginning,” Yamada said, “Then all of the sudden we got a big push around 12:00 and 3:30, 4 o’clock… but by 5 o’clock everybody’s back at home with their families, enjoying the rest of the Christmas season.”
