New flyhalf kicks Samoa to 25-23 win over Canada in Grenoble
GRENOBLE, France — Samoa unveiled a potential new star as teenage flyhalf D’Angelo Leuila kicked 20 points to hold off Canada 25-23 and end their European rugby tour on a high on Friday.
Making his first start for Samoa, Leuila’s expert goalkicking proved the difference. He slotted four penalties, two dropped goals, and converted Samoa’s only try.
Meanwhile, Canada scored three tries in the last 22 minutes to roar back from 19-6 down and threaten to beat Samoa for the first time in six attempts. But two of the tries weren’t converted.
Canada is ranked 18th in the world compared to No. 14 for Samoa, which was coming off losses to No. 8 France and No. 12 Georgia.
