‘Mamma Mia’ sure to be a hit for Western Canada Theatre

KAMLOOPS — Western Canada Theatre is preparing to lift the curtain on this year’s holiday production – the jukebox musical ‘Mamma Mia’.

The media got a sneak peak of the smash hit production Tuesday, that millions of people around the world have fallen in love with. Mamma Mia is a charming story based on the songs of ABBA and features a cast of 20 actors, singers and dancers. The funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father bring 3 men from her mother’s past back to the island that they visited years before. 

“Sophie, who is getting married on the island has invited her fathers, and the reason there are many is because she doesn’t who is her actual father, and her mother Donna says we’ll just have our own wedding in our own piece of paradise here in Greece. But the plot quickly thickens when they all show up all at the same time,” says Leon Willey, Plays Harry Bright.

“Some chaos ensues the day before her daughter’s wedding, I don’t know if I necessarily want to give away the plot, because if people don’t know the plot, I know many people do and of course everyone knows the music, but if people don’t know the story, I kind of want to leave it a surprise,” says Cailin Stadnyk, Plays Donna Sheridan. 

Mamma Mia is one of Western Canada Theatre’s largest productions and the company is one of only a few theatre’s in all of Canada to get the rights to the show. The magic of ABBA’s timeless songs is sure to have audiences dancing in their seats.    

“Everyone will go oh I know this song, and they’ll just jump up because that’s kind of what’s been happening. Right now, the rights have been released, slowly but surely it’s making its way, but it hasn’t even gotten to Vancouver yet, so here in Kamloops we’re very fortunate to be able to do it, and especially at this large scale,” says Willey.

“I grew up listening to ABBA, so the songs just infuse this joy already, it’s just happiness to be here,” says Stadnyk.
