City encouraging Kamloops residents to recycle their pumpkin

KAMLOOPS — Now that Hallowe’en is over, people are going to start throwing out their pumpkins over the next few days. But the City of Kamloops is encouraging residents not to toss them in the garbage.

This year, the city is more actively campaigning for people to recycle their pumpkin. There’s a pumpkin drop-off set up at all three yard waste sites, including Cinnamon Ridge, hoping to cut down on the amount of curbside garbage.

“Pumpkins have always been compostable, but this year we’re taking a different approach with it and trying to encourage people to get pumpkins out of curbside garbage and into the compost stream,” says the city’s Streets and Environmental Services manager Glen Farrow.

“Every collection day after Hallowe’en, for that week or two after Hallowe’en, we’re seeing a jump in tonage, and a lot of that is attributed to pumpkins we’re seeing in garbage collection.”

Farrow says the pumpkins will then be mixed with leaves, grass clippings, and other yard waste, and composted to turn into soil.
