Canada comes back for 3-2 win over Cameroon in U17 women’s World Cup opener

IRBID, Jordan — Canada kicked off the U17 Women’s World Cup on Friday with a 3-2 comeback win over Cameroon.

Hannah Taylor scored the winner on a header in the 83rd minute, just five minutes after Sarah Stratigakis pulled Canada even on a penalty kick. The victory moved Canada into first place in the Group B standings with three points.

Canada’s Jordyn Huitema opened the scoring in the third minute but Soline Djoubi and Claudia Dabda tallied later in the half for Cameroon.

“It was a real Canadian gritty performance right to the end,” said Canadian coach Bev Humphries-Priestman. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy against such a physical team like Cameroon, but we are really proud of our team.

“It was such a roller-coaster game, but that is only going to help the team learn and move forward in their journey towards the women’s national team as well as move forward in this tournament.”
