CP’s Lori Ewing and Frank Gunn to be honoured at 2016 Sports Media Canada awards

TORONTO — Canadian Press journalists Lori Ewing and Frank Gunn are being honoured by Sports Media Canada.

Ewing is the recipient of the 2016 George Gross Award for outstanding sportswriting while Gunn is being honoured for outstanding photography.

Both are being singled out for their work at this summer’s Rio Olympics while Ewing is also being honoured for her coverage of the Toronto Raptors’ playoff run and the Paralympics.

Ewing has covered Olympic sports and basketball at CP for more than 15 years.

“Lori’s passion and dedication to the job shine through in her work every day,” said Canadian Press senior editor Julie Scott. “Her commitment to meticulous reporting, lively writing and balanced journalism has not only earned her the respect of her colleagues but also the athletes she covers. This is a well-deserved honour.”

Gunn, who is taking home the award for a second time, has shot some of Canada’s most significant sports moments over more than 20 years at CP.

“This award demonstrates the excellent photo work done by our photo crew in Rio, but specifically puts the spotlight on Frank’s outstanding work during the Games,” said Graeme Roy, CP’s Director of News Photography. “That it is his second time winning this award shows his ongoing dedication to excellence in photography.”

Blue Jays play-by-play man Jerry Howarth is the winner of the award for broadcasting.

Longtime broadcaster John Badham and retired Toronto Star columnist Dave Perkins are being honoured for career achievement.

Joining the honour roll posthumously are writer George Dulmage and broadcasters Graham Leggat and John Saunders.

Raptors president Masai Ujiri is the executive of the year while Douglas H. Mitchell is the winner of the SMC President’s Award for career leadership roles in amateur and professional sports.

The awards will be presented Nov. 10 in Toronto.

Sports Media Canada is the Canadian chapter of A.I.P.S., the international association of sports journalists.
