Big forward McCarron, Finnish flash Lehkonen look to impress at Habs rookie camp
BROSSARD, Que. — A lighter, leaner Michael McCarron wants to show the Montreal Canadiens he’s ready to play in the NHL.
The 21-year-old forward is probably the closest to making the Canadiens’ roster among the 27 players at the opening day of rookie camp Thursday. But Finnish forward Artturi Lehkonen, 2016 first-round pick Mikhail Sergachev and 2014 first-rounder Nikita Scherbak will also draw attention.
The squad had a one-hour skate before heading to London, Ont., for a rookie tournament that begins Friday against prospects from the Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins.
McCarron, a 2013 first-round pick who helped the Oshawa Generals win the 2015 Memorial Cup, spent most of last season with the St. John’s IceCaps of the American Hockey League. But he was called up twice and played 20 games with the Canadiens, posting one goal and one assist.
