Parkinson’s SuperWalk helps raise money, awareness

KAMLOOPS — The Parkinson SuperWalk is the single largest fundraiser for Parkinson Canada, that annually raises millions of dollars for education, research, and support programs for those with the disease.

Saturday at Riverside Park, hundreds of Kamloops residents came out to show their support for friends and loved ones battling Parkinson’s. Local Facilitator with the Kamloops Parkinson’s Awareness group, Rendy Olthius, says one of the biggest hurdles people with Parkinson’s face is a lack of understanding about the disease.

“Part of our mandate for our group… is to make people aware of the disease in the community,” Olthius explained. “The more people we get out here [at the SuperWalk], the more impact we have.”

Olthius has lived with Parkinsons for close to two decades, and says events like the SuperWalk are a great way to connect with others in the community who share similar experiences.

“It just makes you feel wonderful, I guess. The people who come out and support you, and realizing you’re not alone.”
