Blue Jays’ Devon Travis once again sidelined with right hand injury

TORONTO — Devon Travis isn’t sure how he hurt himself, he just knows he’s missing playing time as the Toronto Blue Jays fight to repeat as American League East Division champions.

The Jays second baseman was sidelined with a right knuckle injury on Tuesday and will be out of the lineup again on Wednesday night when Toronto faces the Los Angeles Angels.

Toronto (71-54) is currently tied for first place in the AL East with the Boston Red Sox.

“The fact that I can’t even tell myself how it happened makes it even a little bit more frustrating,” Travis said. “We have 30 something games left and we’re in a pennant race. I need to be in there for my teammates and my coaches and this entire team. It sucks.”

Travis, 25, spoke to reporters prior to Wednesday’s game at Rogers Centre and says that the injury, located on his ring finger, was something that got progressively worse every day.

He’s not sure the exact day that the injury occurred but started feeling strain during Toronto’s series in New York against the Yankees last week.

Travis, who is hitting .300 with 10 home runs and 37 runs batted in during 69 games this season, says that hitting is the part of the game where the injury is affected him the most.

“It just got to be at the point where I wasn’t saying anything and it was bothering me to the point where I felt like I should go in there and get a little bit of treatment to get some help,” Travis said.

Veteran Darwin Barney slotted into Travis’s spot in the lineup on Tuesday night, collecting two hits and scoring twice as the Blue Jays beat the Angels 7-2.

Travis says that he’s been doing a little bit of everything when it comes to treatment, including a cortisone shot on Sunday night that he’s is hopeful will help him out.

Both Travis and Toronto manager John Gibbons are hoping that the five foot nine, 190 pounder will be able to return on Thursday for the finale of the Blue Jays’ three-game set with Los Angeles.

“It’s not a big thing, it’s just aggravating him right now,” Gibbons said. “Give him another day, hopefully he’ll be ready to go tomorrow. He was really just starting to come into his own as a player.”

Travis added that it is probably a smart move to give him another day’s rest on Wednesday and doesn’t believe that a trip to the disabled list is needed.

In other Blue Jays injury news, Gibbons said that star slugger Jose Bautista is on track to return to the Toronto lineup on Thursday.

The right-fielder was put on the disabled list on Aug. 10 with a sprained left knee that was suffered against the Tampa Bay Rays earlier this month. Bautista was attempting a throw from right field when he suffered the injury, which landed him on the DL for the second time this year.

The 35-year-old Bautista is batting .222 with 15 home runs and 48 RBI in 80 games this season.

Bautista played in simulated games in Florida on Tuesday and Wednesday. Gibbons said all went well and that he should land in Toronto Wednesday night.
