Spreading its wings: A look at Alimentation Couche-Tard’s top five acquisitions
MONTREAL — In just over 35 years, Alimentation Couche-Tard has grown from a single corner store based in Laval, Que., to becoming the biggest convenience store company in Canada and the U.S. with more than 10,000 locations after Monday’s deal with CST Brands. Here’s a look at the company’s top five acquisitions by value:
Aug. 22, 2016: CST Brands Inc. for US$4.4 billion, including debt. Alimentation Couche-Tard agrees to then sell the majority of CST Brands’ Canadian assets, including at least 45 per cent of its retail locations, to Parkland Fuel Corp. for about C$965 million.
April 20, 2012: Makes first foray into Europe with the purchase of Scandinavia’s Statoil Fuel & Retail and its 2,300 locations for US$2.8 billion.
March 8, 2016: Grows presence in Ontario and Quebec with C$1.7 billion deal to buy 279 Esso retail stations from Imperial Oil. Transaction is expected to close shortly.
