Ottawa Senators to retire former captain Daniel Alfredsson’s No. 11 jersey
OTTAWA — No. 11 is synonymous with Daniel Alfredsson and the Ottawa Senators, and now the organization is making sure it always will be.
Senators owner Eugene Melnyk announced Tuesday the team would be retiring the former captain’s jersey on Dec. 29 when Ottawa hosts the Detroit Red Wings.
Alfredsson will become just the second player in club history to receive the honour, and the first in the modern-day era. Frank Arthur Finnigan, a forward on the original Senators from 1923-31 and 1932-34, had his No. 8 retired in 1992.
“I don’t think I understand what it means yet, to be honest,” said Alfredsson, as he recalled seeing former stars like Nicklas Lidstrom and Ken Dryden having their numbers honoured.
