RCMP DESCRIBE RACE TO THWART TERROR ATTACK

An early-morning tip from FBI investigators triggered a “race against time” as police scrambled to identify and locate a balaclava-wearing would-be suicide bomber they feared was on the verge of killing innocent Canadians. Within three hours, they believed they had found their man: Aaron Driver, 24, a known terrorist sympathizer who was living in the southwestern Ontario town of Strathroy, under court-imposed conditions.

FEDS SET RULES FOR GROWING MEDICAL MARIJUANA

Revamped federal rules to allow Canadians to grow their own medical marijuana are likely to form part of the government’s overall plan for legalization of the drug, the federal justice minister says. The new rules will allow people who have been authorized by their doctor to use medicinal cannabis to grow a limited amount of marijuana for their personal use, or designate someone else to grow it for them.

F-35 STEALTH FIGHTERS LAND IN B.C. FOR DEBUT

The new-age fighter jet once poised to replace Canada’s aging CF-18 fleet, but whose ballooning price tag and controversial selection process threw its purchase into doubt, has made its inaugural visit to Canada. A pair of F-35 stealth fighters roared into British Columbia on Thursday in preparation for the annual Abbotsford International Airshow.

MONTREAL BLACKSMITHS TOILING AWAY IN OBSCURITY FACE EVICTION

A group of blacksmiths has been teaching their trade in Montreal for years, but now they face eviction. While blacksmithing classes exist in certain parts of the country, Mathieu Collette says his non-profit group and the building from which it operates is the only place in North America dedicated to teaching the ancient techniques of forging metal. Collette and other blacksmiths say the city is trying to kick them out over a lease dispute.
