FRESHWATER RESEARCH STATION ANNOUNCEMENT TODAY

Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister are expected to make a funding announcement today for a world-class freshwater research station in northwestern Ontario. The Experimental Lakes Area research facility near Kenora, Ont., was destined for the chopping block in 2012 when the Conservatives said they could save $2 million a year in operating costs by shutting it down.

B.C. JUDGE ORDERS LAKESIDE ‘MONSTROSITY’ TO BE RENOVATED

A judge has ordered major renovations at a lakeside property near Kamloops, B.C., that neighbours describe as a “monstrosity” and an “abomination.” The judge said the owners breached a so-called gentleman’s agreement with neighbours when in 2011 they built a home on top of a retaining wall on their Shuswap Lake property.

ONE DEAD, SIX HURT, IN FIERY MONTREAL CRASH.

Montreal police hope video surveillance tape will help determine the cause of a fiery crash involving a tanker truck that left one person dead and six others injured on Tuesday. The tanker truck carrying what authorities said were hazardous materials crashed on an elevated highway and erupted in flames, killing the driver, a man in his 40s.

WOMAN INJURED IN QUEBEC LION ATTACK SHOULD RECOVER

The head of a Quebec’s Granby Zoo says an employee who was attacked by a lion should make a full recovery. Paul Gosselin says the woman in her early 20s had surgery on Monday night after a “minor” neck fracture. The 14-year-old female lion that attacked her will not be put down because it did not show any abnormal behaviour before or after the attack.

CANADIAN MEDAL TALLY IN RIO UP TO 5 — AND COUNTING.

Quebec divers Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito kept Canada’s medal streak going at the Rio Summer Games with another bronze medal. They were third in the women’s 10-metre synchronized diving event Tuesday to give Canada its fifth medal — one silver and four bronze. Filion and Benfeito also won bronze in the same event four years ago in London.
