A number of indigenous traditions are expected to be part of a ceremony at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Que., today, where the federal government will hand over the inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal women to five commissioners. Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett met with the families of the victims Tuesday night to brief them on the details of the inquiry.

U.S. AIR FORCE DECLARES F-35 COMBAT READY

After years of cost overruns, delays, and political headaches, the U.S. air force says the version of the F-35 fighter plane that Canada was planning to buy is ready for combat. IMPACT OF B.C. FOREIGN HOMEBUYER TAX UNCERTAIN

Experts are expressing doubt a property transfer tax on foreign buyers will have a significant impact on housing affordability in Metro Vancouver. The next four to six months will be uncertain until the different players in the market decide how to react to the 15 per cent tax, said Anne McMullin, president of the non-profit industry association Urban Development Institute.

CALGARY HOUSING MARKET CONTINUES TO COOL

Calgary’s real estate market continues to cool as sales dropped for a 20th consecutive month in July, but the city’s local real estate board says fewer listings helped stem further price drops. The Calgary Real Estate Board said Tuesday that sales activity totalled 1,741 units last month, for a 12.6 decrease over last year. Ann-Marie Lurie, chief economist at CREB, said layoffs and people leaving Calgary are putting pressure on the market.

WOMEN’S SOCCER LAUNCHES RIO GAMES TODAY

The Rio Games don’t officially begin until the Opening Ceremony on Friday night, but Canada’s women’s soccer team plays its first preliminary match today against Australia in Sao Paulo. The Canadian women won the bronze medal in soccer at the last Summer Olympics in London in 2012.
