Abandoned campfires may lead to ban

KAMLOOPS — There is still no campfire ban in BC, but don’t be surprised if one goes into effect very soon.

Over the weekend the BC Wildfire Service was called out to deal with 38 abandoned campfires in the Kamloops Fire Centre alone.

Since last Friday there have been 20 new wildfires started in our area, 14 caused by lightning.

To date 71 of the 130 wildfires reported in Kamloops Fire Centre this year have been determined as human caused.

The current fire hazard rating in our area is moderate except for pockets of high in the Salmon Arm, Penticton and Clearwater fire zones.

If you are found leaving a campfire lit & unattended, you can be fined $1150, and up to a million dollars if it causes a wildfire.
