BAIL DECISION FOR TORONTO POLICE OFFICER EXPECTED TODAY

A Toronto police officer sentenced to six years for gunning down a troubled teen Sammy Yatim on an empty streetcar three years ago is expected to learn today if he’ll get bail while he appeals. At sentencing Thursday, Justice Edward Then said Const. James Forcillo abused his authority in a way that undermines public trust in law enforcement and the justice system. Forcillo’s lawyer said an appeal had already been filed on the conviction and sentencing.

FUNERAL TODAY FOR MAN WHO DIED AFTER POLICE CONFRONTATION

A funeral service is planned for today in Ottawa for a 37-year-old Somali-Canadian man who died following a physical confrontation with police last Sunday. Abdirahman Abdi was taken down by police on a sidewalk following a disturbance call. Several dozen people gathered for a vigil in Montreal Thursday night saying Abdi’s death highlights a culture of police brutality that disproportionately victimizes people who are black or mentally ill.

B.C. JUDGE SET TO RULE ON ENTRAPMENT IN TERROR TRIAL

A B.C. Supreme Court judge is expected to rule today on whether the RCMP coerced a Vancouver-area couple into plotting to blow up the provincial legislature on Canada Day three years ago. The judge is to decide if an elaborate police sting that was originally launched to assess a potential homegrown terrorist threat actually manipulated its targets, John Nuttall and Amanda Korody, into breaking the law.

EFFORTS TO REACH CANADIANS IN TURKEY STYMIED

Government efforts to reach two Turkish Canadians arrested in connection with a failed coup in Turkey earlier this month have so far been stymied. Davud Hanci and Ilhan Erdem were arrested and detained separately over the past week as Turkish authorities swept up thousands of people it accuses of having supported the July 15 coup attempt, which left more than 200 people dead.

LATEST GDP FIGURES TO SHOW ECONOMIC COSTS OF ALBERTA WILDFIRES

Statistics Canada is expected to shed light on the economic impact of the wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alta., today when it releases the gross domestic product figures for May. The disaster, which forced the shutdown of crude operations and led to a 25 per cent drop in Canada’s oilsands output in May, has dimmed economic growth prospects for the second quarter.
