KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops RCMP says it’s facing challenges in getting drivers to leave their phones alone.
In July, police have issued 45 tickets for distracted driving, amounting to $24,000 in revenue.
“It remains a priority and we continue to need to impress upon people the importance and the message that texting and the use of cell phones are just an amazing contributor to motor vehicle safety and accidents,” says RCMP Superintendent Brad Mueller.
Starting June 1, the province raised the fines for distracted driver from $167 to $368. Drivers caught texting or talking on their phones also face an additional $175 bill for four penalty points, all amounting to $543 for a first-time offense.
A second distracted driving ticket within 12 months will cost $888. A third offence would cost a driver $1,600.
Between 2010 and 2014, police officers throughout B.C. issued more than 42,000 tickets to distracted drivers.
