KAMLOOPS — RCMP have a warning to the public after a couple of fires were discovered in the green space above Aberdeen last week.
Corporal Jodi Shelkie says they had both ignited near hiking trails above the Kamloops Fire Rescue Hall #7.
“One fire on July 17 was a small grass fire that may have been an accident, perhaps a discarded cigarette butt. This fire was extinguished by Kamloops Fire Rescue. There was a second fire on July 21, and it was definitely deliberately set,” said Shelkie.
Shelkie says that fire burnt out on its own.
She notes people who deliberately or carelessly cause a fire can be ticketed or even face criminal charges.
“Any discarded cigarette butts could have devastating consequences for people and property. Also, purposely setting a fire on green-space in the city is illegal, especially now with the temperatures getting warmer, and thing drying out. People have to be careful.”
