KAMLOOPS — Downtown residents were alarmed by a major hazardous material response at the Battle Street RCMP detachment last night.

Several emergency vehicles and scores of emergency personnel were seen paying particular attention to a couple of vehicles in the detachment’s parking lot.

Corporal Jodi Shelkie says it stemmed from an RCMP officer who seized some drugs.

“He put them inside of his vehicle, as well as from the suspect’s vehicle. We weren’t able to determine if it was fentanyl or not. To be on the safe side, we called in a CLAN lab team who looked through the vehicles. In the suspect vehicle they found a small amount of cocaine,” explained Cpl. Shelkie.

Shelkie says it doesn’t appear the RCMP member’s health was impacted by the substance.
