KAMLOOPS — The BC Coroners Service has revealed details into the death of a young Danish woman who died in Wells Gray Provincial Park last Friday.

According to a news release, 20 year old Mia Nørgaard Langhoff was part of an outdoor adventure school in Denmark taking its year-end field trip to Canada.

She was hiking with the group on Huntley Mountain, about 88 kilometres north of Clearwater, when she slipped on fresh snow, lost her balance, and fell down a steep, 30 metre embankment.

Though one of the group’s instructors hiked and canoed out to get help, that was a seven hour trek.

A military search and rescue helicopter based at CFB Comox rushed to the scene, but Langhoff had already died of her injuries.

Regional Coroner Larry Marzinzik says even if the response was immediate, Langhoff may not have survived the fall.

“At this point, I can’t say for sure, but I am venturing from the information I have that [the delay in getting to Langhoff] most likely did not contribute to it because she did have injuries as a result of the fall that were contributory to the death, and they may not have been survivable,” said Marzinzik.

The RCMP has joined the Coroners Service in investigating.

“Anytime something like this happens to any family, we must classify it as a very tragic situation. When people are remotely removed from the situation that must add to the stress level that the family is going through at this time.”
