Google Trekker tours the North

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. —  It’s an odd-looking device that will put some of the most remote regions of the province on the map. Literally. It’s a Google Street View Trekker that has been modified to mount on a back pack. Over the summer months, it will travel over 1,500 kilometres into locations inaccessible by car.

This is the largest Trekker mapping project ever undertaken between a provincial tourism marketing organization and Google in Canada.

“Once you experience the power of BC’s wilderness, you are forever under its spell,” says Maya Lange, the VP of Global Marketing for Destination BC. “Trekker’s immersive 360-technology will bring to life the majesty of our province in an unforgettable way.”

In Northern BC treks will feature the rugged sea-swept coast and Aboriginal culture of Haida Gwaii and explore Mount Edziza and Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness Parks, among many other diverse landscapes and eco-systems.

People will walk in the footsteps of dinosaurs in Tumbler Ridge Global Geopark and roam Ancient Forest, BC’s newest provincial park, home to giant western cedar trees and part of the only known inland temperate rainforest in the world.
