Canada Post could be headed for a labour stoppage

KAMLOOPS — Canada Post workers across the country, may be on the verge of a labour dispute this summer.  

Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, have been in contract negotiations for the past 6 months, trying to reach a new agreement for about 50,000 workers, including letter carriers and mailroom staff here in Kamloops. Several issues are on the table, including wages, working conditions, and job security.

“They want to change our pensions, change our extended health payments, right now our family is covered, but they just want the member themselves to be covered, so if you have 3 or 4 kids at home and you need dental or physio or some kind of treatment, they’re not going to cover that anymore, so that’s a huge hit to the members,” says Patricia Nauss, President of Kamloops Local 758.

CUPW also wants the liberal government to hold true to its word, and restore door-to-door mail service to communities impacted since the Conservatives announced plans to phase it out by 2019. As of July 2nd, the union will be without a contract. Strike votes are being held across the country, and there is a strong possibility the crown corporation will lock their workers out. 

“We’re looking at up to 2 months of lockout, it’s a long time, it’ll affect a lot of people, especially a lot of members working there, it’ll also affect the public in Kamloops because a lot of mail won’t be sent out, it’ll affect mail service, parcel service, things like that,” says Nauss.
