KAMLOOPS — Residents in the City of Kamloops will have their say on the possibility of an urban hen regulation in the city.
At this afternoon’s meeting (May 10th), council voted 6-3 to send a proposed amendment to the animal control bylaw to public hearing.
Among the recommendations the public will discuss is a $10,000 expenditure to build a coop at the city’s animal control facility for stray hens.
Councillor Tina Lange suggested bylaw officers drop stray hens off for feed at the BC Wildlife Park, but Community Safety and Enforcement Manager Jon Wilson says that’s not done.
“For any animal that we potentially impound, we have to secure that animal, we have to do it in a humane manner. We have to have an adequate facility. I can’t put chickens in the same facility that I put dogs in. I’m pretty sure the SPCA would not consider that humane. So there is a cost associated with it,” said Wilson.
The public hearing will likely take place in June.
