Air quality scientist addresses Kamloops council

KAMLOOPS — Air quality scientist hired by KGHM Ajax addressed city council on Tuesday, taking questions about the air quality report he produced as part of the company’s 18-thousand page application.

Peter Reid from Stantec Consulting reiterated to council the existing air quality in Kamloops is good, except for a few days a year. Using historical metereological data, Reid says even with the Ajax mine, the air quality won’t change dramatically, even in Aberdeen.

“Adding the mine to what’s already in Aberdeen is the same as the effect of being in Aberdeen and perhaps moving about a kilometer further north into the city, into Upper Sahali,” says Reid. “I kind of wonder, ‘do people really perceive there’s much different air quality with respect to particles that are invisible between Upper Aberdeen, mid-Aberdeen, and Lower Aberdeen.”
