Kamloops library offers storytime for adults

KAMLOOPS — Dr. Seuss may have said it best: “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.” But what if you’re reading to an audience of adults?

Most adults are probably more used to reading stories, instead of having stories read to them; on the last Friday of each month, the Kamloops Public Library hosts Adult Storytime. “We saw that other libraries were doing this, and with the adult colouring trend being quite popular over the winter, we decided to give it a shot,” said the Head of Reference at the Library, Joelle Samson.

That’s right. Story time and colouring. It’s like taking a time machine back to your primary school days. So far, the response has been good, with around 10 people showing up each of the sessions.

Library staff try to have a theme for each of the storytime events. Seeing as this week is Freedom to Read Week, the story choices were books, poems, and a graphic novel, all of which have been challenged or banned in certain places.

One of today’s books was And Tango Makes Three, a picture book, which has stirred up it’s share of controversy since it was published in 2005. “It’s a true story about… two male penguins, who basically created a family, and adopted an egg, who hatched and became little Tango. So, Tango makes three,” Samson described. She continued: “[The book] has been banned because of the homosexuality aspect of it, but it’s a true story. We feel.. all aspects and all values should be represented in our libraries. A good library… has something to offend everyone.”

Because of the holiday, next month’s story time session for grown-ups will be on March 18th. If you’re having a stressful Friday, head down to the Kamloops Public Library, grab some pencil crayons, and take in a couple of stories.
