B.C. Budget a boon for home builders

KAMLOOPS — The president of the Canadian Home Builders Association – Central Interior says yesterday’s tax changes announced by the BC government are something his association has been lobbying to get for years.

In his budget, provincial Finance Minister Mike de Jong announced the property transfer tax will be waived on new homes priced under 750-thousand dollars.

Matt McCurrach says that’s the vast majority of homes built in Kamloops and the surrounding region.

“It’s a big win for consumers of new homes, and it’s certainly going to help builders out, with the construction of new homes we think it’s really going to spur the industry on, and the end result is homeowners are going to be the winners,” said McCurrach.

McCurrach adds with the cost of housing skyrocketing in the past few years, any tax change helps.

He notes the local new home building sector has started off 2016 on a hot streak, with builders telling him their products are selling well.
