District to decide on new school names

KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops-Thompson Board of Education is expected to vote Monday on new names for two local schools.

After a lengthy process narrowed down the possibilities – there are two each for the former Beattie students who will be moving to the John Pederson campus on Ninth Avenue this September, and the former Stuart Wood students moving to the former Beattie campus on McGill Road.

They are Kamloops Academy of Fine Arts or Kamloops School for the Arts as well as either Beattie Elementary or McGill Elementary.

Superintendent Karl de Bruijn says it’s up to the board to decide.

“We’re bringing it forward to them, they could accept what we have given to them, and say, make that decision on Monday night, they could maybe send it back i guess potentially for more information, but I suspect that they will make a decision,” said de Bruijn.

De Bruijn notes most often new schools are named for their geographical areas, but Kamloops hasn’t had a new school to name in quite some time.
