KAMLOOPS — In Canada, we can get virtually any food we desire by simply visiting a grocery store.
According to a recent study by the Food Institute of the University of Guelph, food prices in Canada are on the rise, meaning you’ll likely pay more at the grocery store in 2016.
Food prices are just one aspect of food security, but for the average Canadian, they might be the most obvious. If you’ve bought groceries in the past year, you know once you reach that checkout, your dollar doesn’t go as far as it once did.
In fact, according to the 2016 food price report from the Food Institute of the University of Guelph, the overall price of food rose by 4.1% in 2015, well above the rate of inflation.
In 2016, the report predicts the price you pay for food will increase by 2.4% meaning if the average Canadian family could pay up to $345 dollars more for food than they did in 2015
One place many Canadians have seen the largest rise in prices was at the meat counter, around 5% in 2015, thanks in large part to the jump in the cost of beef.
