KAMLOOPS — Avalanche Canada has issued a warning for recreationalists in an unusual part of the back country in the B.C. Interior .
Forecasters warn of an increased avalanche risk in the Central Columbia mountains in relatively low elevation which is typically considered safe terrain.
There is a weak layer between 14-hundred metres of elevation and 18-hundred metres which is where people generally find good skiing and sledding conditions.
Forecaster Karl Klassen says “the danger rating will change depending on what’s happening with the weather.
At the moment the danger rating is at the high to considerable range depending on where you are. Ratings will fluctuate day to day depending on weather and conditions. “
The warning will be in place through to Monday until forecasters re evaluate conditions and consider if they want to extend the waring.
“When you’re travelling through that elevation band, you should stay on non-avalanche terrain,” said Klassen.
“Stay on the road. Don’t be bouncing of the cutbacks on the side of the road. Don’t be going off and into the cut blocks or into open glades in the trees there that are steeper than about 25 to 30 degrees. Travel through safe terrain.”
