KAMLOOPS — Genome BC has committed $250,000 dollars for a new opportunity at Thompson Rivers University.
The money will help create a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Industrial Research Chair position.
“If I’m restoring a site near Kamloops, and my collaborator in Sudbury, ON is restoring a site there – are they reaching the same goals, and are there differences? If they are both successful we can gain a lot more information.” Said TRU Professor Dr. Lauchlan Fraser, who is a candidate for the chair. Dr. Fraser adds this would put TRU on par with scores of other research Universities across the country.
In the face of climate change, Dr. Fraser says it’s important to solve environmental disturbances caused by mining, forestry and ranching. The research position is a step closer to the creation of a Centre for Ecosystem Reclamation at TRU, which would be the first of its kind in Canada
Thompson Rivers University President Alan Shaver says the position “represents the next logical step for continued excellence in restoration ecology at TRU.”
