Smoking ban coming for city parks, civic properties

Kamloops council has voted to institute a complete ban of smoking in city parks.

The ban was championed by Councillor Ken Christian who says the ban would do nothing but positive things.

“This initiative will reduce exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, it will reduce modeling of smoking behaviors to children, it will demoralize tobacco use within the city,” said Christian.

Mayor Peter Milobar says it’s another by-law the city’s by-law department would not be able to enforce. “I fundamentally have a hard time with us continuing to pass by-laws that we pass and say at the same time are not enforceable,” Milobar told council Tuesday afternoon.

The final count was 7-2, with Mayor Milobar and Councillor Pat Wallace opposed.
