KAMLOOPS — ICBC is urging drivers to be alert this Easter long weekend to help reduce the carnage on B.C. roads.

Every Easter long weekend ICBC says an average of four people are killed and 650 injured in 2,300 crashes province-wide.

In the Southern Interior alone, an average of 62 people are injured in 310 crashes every year.

With those numbers in mind, ICBC is sharing the followings tips to help keep people safe:

  • Check your engine oil, washer fluid, lights and inspect your tires before heading out.
  • Be prepared by packing an emergency kit in case you get stuck or stranded. Check Drive BC before leaving home too.
  • Ensure you’re well rested before leaving home. Take breaks or switch drivers if driving long distances.
  • Slow down on wet roads.
  • Don’t use your cell phone while driving.
  • Watch out for wildlife. Animals may be feeding on plants near the roadside this spring.

Those aforementioned stats are based on ICBC data collected from 2011 to 2015, from 6:00 p.m. the Thursday prior to Good Friday until midnight Easter Monday.
