Fraud/theft suspects arrested after pursuit

KAMLOOPS — Police had to use a spike belt to stop a theft suspect who was said to be driving dangerously around Vernon in a U-Haul cube van.

Mounties received reports of a man and woman trying to buy a large amount of electronic and household items from the Bay and Best Buy using fraudulent credit cards on Sunday.

Police showed up outside the Best Buy to try and stop the U-Haul but the driver sped away, hitting two police vehicles and another unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot.

A female suspect was arrested at that site.

Police eventually were able to stop the van using a spike belt near Ellison Provincial Park, taking a man into custody.

“The U-Haul van sped away from the scene at high rates of speed, with numerous reports flooding in from the public that a van was driving dangerously throughout the immediate area,” says Cst. Kelly Brett. “Fortunately no RCMP officers or members of the public were injured during this incident.”

The two suspects are from the Lower Mainland, with charges pending for fraud, dangerous driving and possession of stolen property.

“Through further investigation, RCMP have learned that the two suspects, may have been involved with numerous theft from motor vehicles that were reported over the weekend,” says Brett.

“It was the quick thinking of the stores employee’s in recognizing that something was suspicious about the two suspects and the information they provided. This led police to be able to respond immediately and ultimately apprehend the two suspects.”
