KAMLOOPS — The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack got a first half goal from Marisa Mendonca and held on to beat the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat 1-0 in Canada West women’s soccer on Saturday (Oct 7).

TRU head coach Kelly Shantz:
“This was a giant victory in a couple of ways. We are still trying to chase down that sixth playoff spot. We have seven points. With a little bit of luck in this. Maybe UNBC has a tough weekend and maybe we are in a tie for sixth spot with four games left in the season. We want to have short term goals. We are a team that is building and that is struggling. Putting up a couple of “W’s”in the way. It is one thing to talk about getting better but getting rewarded like we did today—for gritty, scratchy, fight it out, yell at it other, circle the wagons, whatever it took to get a win. The girls get that feeling too that it is never really over, you are never really out of it if you work hard. That was a good lesson today.”
COACHES VIDEO COMMENTS:
WolfPack defender Cassie Morris (2nd year, Kamloops, BC):
“This game was one that we had circled as a must win for us. Super excited that we came back from the tie on Thursday. It was awesome for us. The difference was we were much calmer on this day. Thursday, we were much more scrambly and going 100 miles per hour. But Kelly talked to us and said take your time and play the way you are facing. That is what really helped us. We doubled our win total from last year and we are super excited. We can keep moving forward and maybe make the playoffs.”
The WolfPack continue their home stand as they entertain the University of Calgary Dinos and the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns next weekend.
The Pronghorns will be at Hillside on Saturday, October 14th for a 1 pm kick off. The Dinos will invade Hillside on Sunday October 15th for a 2 pm kickoff.
UBCO will entertain the Dinos on the Saturday and the Pronghorns on the Sunday.
All of the WolfPack matches—home and away—will be webcast live on a pay per view basis on www.Canadawest.TV.
