Explosive device leads to tense morning on Brocklehurst street

KAMLOOPS — RCMP say a tense situation in Brocklehurst this morning was caused by the discovery of a “potential incendiary device.”

The device was reported to police at about 2:00 a.m., outside the front of a townhouse on Cambridge Crescent.

“It wasn’t being used in a threatening manner. We had just received some information so we responded and in fact did find something,” said Cpl. Jodi Shelkie of Kamloops RCMP.

Police evacuated four nearby residences, and called in the RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU).

When EDU members arrived, they disposed of the device, and a bomb-sniffing dog was called in from Kelowna, but did not find any more devices in or around the property.

“In all situations, we have to make sure there is not a further (device),” said Shelkie. “So in this situation, since we did find something we believed could be an incendiary device, we just wanted to make sure there weren’t any others. So that’s why the dog from Kelowna was called. We wanted to be on the safe side.”

A 38 year old man from Keremeos, previously known to police, has been taken into custody and is facing charges.
