MERRITT, B.C.  — The Thompson Nicola Regional District has declared a state of emergency in 'Area M - Nicola Valley - North'.

The state of emergency is due to flooding and road closures in the area.

Information Officer Debbie Sell indicated in a news release, "This Declaration provides the TNRD with the authority to perform emergency works within and around waterways, including constructing or placing erosion protection works or flood protection works when an emergency is declared. It also permits the TNRD with the authority to clear obstructions from bridges or culverts."

The regional district is reminding residents that if they feel like they are in danger, they should evacuate immediately.

Residents of the area are reminded that if they need further information, or sandbagging supplies, they can call the TNRD Emergency Operations Centre at 1-866-377-7188.

The province has just announced Disaster Financial Assistance will be available to those residents and business owners who have been affected by the flooding. More information on accessing those funds can be found here.
